Instructor: Ms. Collier

Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year! We will be exploring several exciting new topics this year. Our work will surely be interesting, challenging, and relevant. All our investigations will have applications to our daily lives. Check out the summaries below:

Third Grade:

This year we will be exploring electrical circuits. We will be exploring simple and parallel circuits, conductive material exploration, prototyping and troubleshooting. Our hands-on electronics projects are sure to inspire and motivate you to learn even more about the subject. . Best of all, we will be making electronic pop-up cards. Watch out! We’ll also be creating a dance pad that lets you use your feet to sound a buzzer or flash a light.

Fourth Grade:  See The USA!

Pack your bags 4th graders! We’re going on a tour of the United States. You will be working with a partner and each team will explore a different region of our country. You will learn about the states, their capitals, history, and important landmarks. On your way you will manage a budget, pay for hotels, gas and food, and, may even encounter some setbacks along the way (ie. flat tire, out of gas, etc). You will complete a variety of written and multimedia projects such as sightseeing postcards, welcoming billboards, and state discovery posters or commercials. This is going to be fun!

Fifth Grade:  School 2

As you know, our school is undergoing a major renovation. This is your chance to create your dream classroom. You will explore many aspects of classroom design from determining square footage to architecture and design as well as the importance of color schemes, finances, along with furniture selection, lighting, technology, and building codes. This is your chance to be creative and innovative. So start thinking about your dream classroom - your learning environment for the 21st Century!

Fifth Grade:  School 4

Have you ever found yourself looking out the classroom window and wishing you were outside? Well, here’s your chance. We will design a reading garden for our school. It will be a place where classes can go and read or get inspiration for our writing curriculum. Art and science classes can even use it.

Naturally, we will work within a budget; get expert advice from landscape architects, and design specific areas for reading and writing. We’ll need to design or select benches, tables, and native plants for our garden. Let’s make this a space we can be proud of!

Sixth Grade:  Fun With Physics

Physics is typically studied in high school. There are many branches of physics but this year we will explore the areas of motion and forces. This will really be a hands on learning experience. We will be building simple machines, toys, and experiments. By the end of the year you will all be physicists!
